Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 25, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Banter (“Banter,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Banter web app, browser extension, or desktop app (collectively, the “Service”).
Questions or requests? Email [email protected].
1. Information We Collect
Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and name. If you register with a password, it is stored securely hashed—never in plain text. If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google profile (email, name, avatar) and store the tokens needed to keep you signed in.
Content you create. This includes notes, folders, audio recordings, transcripts of those recordings, images and other attachments, chat messages with the Banter assistant, and any context or instructions you write for the assistant.
Usage data. Server logs (IP address, request paths, timestamps, user
agent) generated when you use the Service. On our marketing website
(usebanter.ai) we use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic; the
app itself (app.usebanter.ai) does not use third-party product analytics,
advertising, or session-replay tools.
Browser extension data. The extension records audio and basic page context (URL, title) only while you have an active recording session. It does not collect browsing data outside of recording.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide the Service: store and retrieve your notes, recordings, and chats; transcribe audio; generate summaries and make your content searchable; respond to chat messages.
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Communicate with you about your account, security, and material changes to the Service.
- Diagnose and fix bugs.
We do not train any AI models on your content, and we do not sell your data. We use AI providers (listed below) only through their API offerings, in modes where the provider does not retain or train on the data submitted.
3. Sub-processors and Third Parties
We share the minimum data necessary with the following providers:
| Provider | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Cloud hosting and storage | All stored content, encrypted at rest |
| OpenAI | Background AI tasks: summaries, image descriptions, and search | Note text, transcripts, and image content |
| Anthropic | Primary chat assistant (Claude) | Your chat messages, notes, recordings/transcripts, and attachments referenced in chat |
| Google (Gemini) | Optional alternative chat model, if you select it | Same as Anthropic, only if you opt in |
| Google (OAuth) | Sign-in with Google | Profile info (email, name, avatar) and sign-in tokens |
| AssemblyAI | Audio transcription (speech-to-text) | Audio recordings |
| Google Analytics | Aggregate marketing-site traffic only | Standard web analytics on usebanter.ai (not the app) |
All AI and transcription providers are used through their API offerings under terms that prohibit training on customer data.
4. Where Your Data Is Stored
Banter is hosted in the United States. We may expand to additional regions in the future and will update this policy if we do. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
5. Data Retention and Deletion
You can delete individual notes, recordings, chats, or your entire account at any time from the app. When you delete content:
- It is removed from our live systems immediately.
- Encrypted backups containing the data are purged within 30 days.
- We may retain a minimal record of the deletion event for security and audit purposes.
6. Your Rights
You may, at any time:
- Access the data we hold about you.
- Export your notes, recordings, and transcripts.
- Correct account information from your settings.
- Delete your account and all associated content.
- Disconnect Google sign-in, which revokes the OAuth tokens we hold.
Email [email protected] for any request we don’t expose in the app. Depending on your jurisdiction (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), you may also have rights to data portability, restriction of processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
7. Recording Consent
Banter lets you record audio (in-person, calls, meetings). You are responsible for complying with applicable recording-consent laws in your jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of anyone you record. Some places require all-party consent. Banter does not notify other participants on your behalf.
8. Security
We use industry-standard measures: encryption in transit and at rest, hashed passwords, token-based authentication, and access controls on production infrastructure. No service can guarantee absolute security; please use a strong unique password and keep your sign-in credentials private.
9. Children
Banter is not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect data from, anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with information, email us and we will delete it.
10. Google API Services User Data Policy
Banter’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use Google sign-in only to authenticate you; we do not use Google profile information for advertising, and we do not share it with third parties except as required to provide the Service or by law.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email at least 7 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance.
