Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 5, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Banter (“Banter,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Banter web app, browser extension, desktop app, or iOS app (collectively, the “Service”).
Questions or requests? Email [email protected].
1. Information We Collect and How We Collect It
Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and name. If you register with a password, it is stored securely hashed—never in plain text. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the profile information and tokens those providers return to authenticate you and keep you signed in.
Content you create. This includes notes, folders, audio recordings, live dictation audio, transcripts of recordings or dictation, images and other attachments, assistant chat messages, search queries, speaker labels, and any context or instructions you write for the assistant. We collect this content when you create, upload, record, dictate, paste, attach, or send it through the Service.
Usage data. Server logs (IP address, request paths, timestamps, user
agent) are generated automatically when you use the Service. On our marketing website
(usebanter.ai) we use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic; the
app itself (app.usebanter.ai) does not use third-party product analytics,
advertising, or session-replay tools.
Recording and extension context. The browser extension and native apps record audio, screen/system audio when supported and selected, page context (URL and title), meeting metadata, and screenshots only when you start or enable a recording or capture feature. Banter does not collect browsing data outside of those active sessions.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide the Service: store and retrieve your notes, recordings, and chats; transcribe audio; generate summaries and make your content searchable; respond to chat messages.
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- Communicate with you about your account, security, and material changes to the Service.
- Diagnose and fix bugs.
3. AI and Transcription Processing
We do not sell your data, and we do not permit third-party AI or transcription providers to use your content to train their models. Banter uses third-party AI and transcription providers to provide transcription, summaries, semantic search, image descriptions, speaker labeling, and assistant chat. Depending on the feature you use, Banter may send recordings, live dictation audio, transcripts, notes, attachments/images, search queries, assistant messages, speaker audio clips, and relevant workspace context to providers including AssemblyAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Fireworks AI, and pyannote.ai.
By creating an account, signing in, or continuing to use Banter, you agree that Banter may process your content with these third-party AI and transcription providers to provide the Service. You can stop future AI or transcription processing by not using those features, deleting content, deleting your account, or contacting us at [email protected].
4. Sub-processors and Third Parties
We share the minimum data necessary with the following providers:
| Provider | Purpose | Data shared | Training/retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services (AWS) | Cloud hosting and storage | All stored content, encrypted at rest | Stores data for Banter under our cloud infrastructure controls |
| AssemblyAI | Audio transcription, speaker labeling, and live dictation speech-to-text | Uploaded recordings, live dictation audio chunks, key terms, and metadata needed for transcription | Not permitted to train on Banter customer data |
| OpenAI | Summaries, embeddings/search, image descriptions, and selected assistant or background AI tasks | Note text, transcripts, image content, attachments, search queries, assistant messages, and relevant workspace context | Not permitted to train on Banter customer data |
| Anthropic | Assistant chat and workspace reasoning features | Assistant messages, notes, transcripts, recordings metadata, attachments, and relevant workspace context referenced in chat | Not permitted to train on Banter customer data |
| Google (Gemini) | Optional alternative assistant model, if you select it | Assistant messages, notes, transcripts, attachments, and relevant workspace context sent to answer your request | Not permitted to train on Banter customer data |
| Fireworks AI | Assistant chat model hosting | Assistant messages, notes, transcripts, attachments, and relevant workspace context sent to answer your request | Not permitted to train on Banter customer data |
| pyannote.ai | Speaker matching, if enabled | Short speaker audio clips and provider-generated voice-derived matching data tied to confirmed speaker labels | Used only to suggest speaker names for later recordings in your account |
| Recall.ai | Desktop meeting capture and transcription support, if enabled | Meeting capture metadata, upload tokens, recordings, and transcript data needed for desktop meeting workflows | Used only to provide enabled meeting-capture features |
| Google (OAuth) | Sign-in with Google | Profile info (email, name, avatar) and sign-in tokens | Used only for authentication and account access |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple | Profile info made available by Apple, such as name and email address, and sign-in tokens | Used only for authentication and account access |
| Google Analytics | Aggregate marketing-site traffic only | Standard web analytics on usebanter.ai (not the app) | Marketing-site analytics only; not used inside the Banter app |
We require service providers that process user data for Banter to protect that data under contractual, security, and confidentiality obligations that provide the same or equal protection as described in this Privacy Policy and required by applicable law and App Store Review Guidelines.
When enabled, speaker matching may use voice-derived matching data from confirmed speaker labels to suggest names in later recordings. This data is scoped to your account, used only for speaker labels, and deleted according to our recording deletion rules.
5. Where Your Data Is Stored
Banter is hosted in the United States. We may expand to additional regions in the future and will update this policy if we do. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
6. Data Retention, Deletion, and Revoking Consent
You can delete individual notes, recordings, chats, or your entire account at any time from the app. Deleting content also removes associated AI-generated outputs such as transcripts, summaries, embeddings, and speaker matching data from live systems where applicable. When you delete content:
- It is removed from our live systems immediately.
- Encrypted backups containing the data are purged within 30 days.
- We may retain a minimal record of the deletion event for security and audit purposes.
You may revoke consent for future AI or transcription processing by not using AI, recording, transcription, dictation, assistant, or speaker matching features, by deleting the content or account you no longer want processed, or by contacting us at [email protected]. Revocation does not affect processing that already occurred before revocation.
7. Your Rights
You may, at any time:
- Access the data we hold about you.
- Export your notes, recordings, and transcripts.
- Correct account information from your settings.
- Delete your account and all associated content.
- Disconnect Google sign-in, which revokes the OAuth tokens we hold.
Email [email protected] for any request we don’t expose in the app. Depending on your jurisdiction (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), you may also have rights to data portability, restriction of processing, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
8. Recording Consent
Banter lets you record audio (in-person, calls, meetings). You are responsible for complying with applicable recording-consent laws in your jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of anyone you record. Some places require all-party consent. Banter does not notify other participants on your behalf.
9. Security
We use industry-standard measures: encryption in transit and at rest, hashed passwords, token-based authentication, and access controls on production infrastructure. No service can guarantee absolute security; please use a strong unique password and keep your sign-in credentials private.
10. Children
Banter is not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect data from, anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with information, email us and we will delete it.
11. Google API Services User Data Policy
Banter’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use Google sign-in only to authenticate you; we do not use Google profile information for advertising, and we do not share it with third parties except as required to provide the Service or by law.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email at least 7 days before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance.
