The assistant

An AI that works inside your workspace — it searches, cites, drafts, and edits notes, not just chats about them.

Press Cmd+L and the assistant opens next to your notes. The difference from a generic chatbot: it has hands. It can search your workspace, read notes and transcripts, create new notes, and edit existing ones.

What to use it for

  • Find things: “When did we last talk to Acme about pricing?” It searches notes and transcripts. When it cites a note or transcript passage, click the reference to inspect the source. Connected email and calendar sources can appear as descriptive labels instead of clickable Banter links.
  • Draft things: “Draft a follow-up email from this note.” It works from what was actually said, not from memory.
  • Change things: “Add the action items from this call to the Acme account plan.” It makes the edit and links you to what changed. Prefer to approve first? Turn off Auto-accept edits from Banter agent in Settings → Preferences and its changes wait in Suggestions instead.
  • Answer from the world: it can also search the web when your workspace doesn’t have the answer.

Giving it the right context

Type @ in the composer to attach workspace context, including notes, folders, people, organizations, and recordings. Mentioning a folder gives the assistant that folder as context — “@Acme what’s the current state of this deal?” reads like a project room, not a global search.

Other ways to provide context:

  • Use Add to chat from a note, folder, person, organization, or brief menu. This adds a context chip to the composer without sending a message.
  • Select text in any note and press Cmd+Shift+L to send the selection straight to the assistant.
  • Dictate your question instead of typing it — the composer takes voice too.

Use connected calendar and email

Connect accounts in Settings → Connections to ask about calendar events and email. New calendar events and outgoing emails are prepared as drafts you review in chat. Use the card’s Create event, Create & invite, or Send action to confirm the change.

Models and attachments

Banter uses its default assistant model unless you enable Experimental AI models in Settings → Updates → Preview features. That adds a model selector to the composer. Image and PDF support varies by model; some cannot read a whole PDF. If a file read reports that limitation, choose a model that supports it before retrying.

Teaching it your rules

The assistant reads your workspace and folder instructions before acting — how you like notes written, where things get filed, what to always include. Setting them up is the highest-leverage five minutes you can spend here.
