Suggestions and review mode
Which AI changes apply right away, which wait for your approval, and where to review them.
Two kinds of AI change happen in your workspace: the ones you ask for in a conversation, and the ones Banter proposes on its own while it maintains your notes in the background. Both apply automatically by default for new accounts. Turn off the corresponding auto-accept switch to review changes first. Suggestions is where waiting changes get reviewed; Settings is where you change the balance.
The switches
Open Settings → Preferences → Suggestions:
| Setting | Default | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Background suggestions | On | Whether Banter reviews your notes in the background at all: improvements and filing. |
| Auto-apply knowledge base improvements | On | Whether those background proposals apply on their own. Off means you review them first. |
| Auto-accept edits from Banter agent | On | Whether changes you ask the assistant for apply immediately. Off means they wait for review. |
| Auto-accept edits from MCP tool calls | On | The same, for AI clients connected over MCP such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex. |
These defaults apply to new accounts; existing accounts keep their saved settings.
The auto-accept switches cover note edits, moves, Trash actions, instruction changes, and changes to people and organizations. Turning one on also applies that source’s saved pending proposals, ignoring local edits to review drafts, even drafts saved on this device. Apply your edited proposal first if you want those changes included. If applying the queue hits a conflict, the setting stays on, earlier successful changes remain applied, and the remaining suggestions still need review.
Turning off Background suggestions disables background suggestions and automatic brief updates; it does not dismiss proposals already waiting for you. Requests you make to the assistant or an MCP client still use their own switches. The setting for a request is read when its assistant turn or tool call begins, so changing a switch does not revise a turn already running.
Briefs update directly, although changes they request to notes can need review. Email sends and calendar creation have their own explicit confirmation buttons; the auto-accept switches do not approve those actions.
Where suggestions appear
While anything needs review, a Suggestions row appears at the top of the sidebar, above All Folders, with a count; the Folders icon in the left rail and the affected note or folder carry badges too. Open it and the queue splits into Needs review and Reviewed.
Reviewing one
A pending note suggestion opens as the note itself, with the proposed changes marked inline, Banter’s reason, and the proposed folder if it’s a move. Edit the proposal if you like, then:
- Apply — accept it; what you see is what lands.
- Revise… — keep the note or its location as it is, or Send & revise with feedback to get a new proposal.
- Dismiss — drop it; the note is untouched.
Edited review drafts are saved on this device and can survive navigation or reload, but they do not change the live note until applied. If the underlying note or proposal changes, review the refreshed result or conflict before applying. Suggestions for people, organizations, or instructions open their own review surfaces.
Send & revise on a note runs in the background and uses Auto-apply knowledge base improvements to decide whether the revision applies directly or returns for review. It can run even when Background suggestions is off because you requested it.
Suggestions you leave pending normally expire after seven days, and a change to the underlying content can make a proposal expire sooner. Recent reviewed entries are listed for 30 days. Once no pending suggestions remain, the Suggestions navigation entry disappears and you return to All Folders.
When you ask the assistant for a change
With Auto-accept edits from Banter agent on, the assistant makes the change and the chat shows a receipt — Edited “Acme account plan” — linking to the note. Turn it off and the same request shows Suggested edit to … and waits in Suggestions until you apply it. Connected MCP clients follow their own switch the same way.
