Unfiled

The built-in folder for notes you haven't filed yet — where new notes land by default, and how to move them on.

Unfiled holds the notes that don’t have a folder yet. Open All Folders → Filter → Folder → Unfiled to see them. The Unfiled filter appears when it contains notes; it has no separate sidebar row. Banter manages this folder for you. It used to be called Quick Notes.

What makes it different

  • It can’t be removed. You can’t rename it, move it, or send it to Trash, and it holds notes but not subfolders. Every other folder is yours to shape.
  • Notes are meant to leave. With background suggestions on (the default), Banter reads an unfiled note once it has some substance and proposes where it belongs — and a proper title if it needs one. Auto-apply knowledge base improvements is on by default for new accounts, so these changes apply automatically. Turn it off to apply or dismiss proposals yourself in Suggestions.
  • AI sees it too. The assistant and any connected AI see it as the /Unfiled folder.

How notes end up here

  • New note from All Folders. With All Folders selected, click New note at the top of your notes and the note is saved in Unfiled. Select a folder first and the note is created there instead.
  • New note from the Unfiled filter. Open the Unfiled filter and click New note at the top of its notes.
  • Extension recordings. A recording started from the extension, or from a meeting’s Record with Banter button, creates a new note in Unfiled unless you pick another destination — for that one recording from the button’s menu, or as the default in Settings → Connections → Chrome extension → Recording destination. The Current note option also falls back to a new unfiled note when no note is open in Banter.
  • Calendar-matched recordings. When the extension matches a recording to a calendar event, the new note takes the event’s title and lands here like any other extension recording, unless you picked another destination.

Filing a note

  • Use the menu. Click the ⋯ next to the note’s date, choose Move, and pick the folder.
  • Apply the suggestion. If Banter has already proposed a folder, apply it from Suggestions.
  • Ask. “Move my unfiled notes about Acme into /Work/Acme” works in the assistant and from a connected AI.

Moving a note back into Unfiled works the same way, for something filed too early. You can also drag a note onto All Folders to move it to Unfiled.
